My services

My therapeutic approach is largely influenced by insight-oriented psychodynamic, humanistic, and systemic approaches. Using these approaches I strive to help you find underlying causes for problematic symptoms or patterns of behavior and why they may persist in your life.  I often integrate this insight with cognitive behavioral techniques to help change behaviors that stem from these patterns. I believe that through this exploration and discovery you are freed to make different life choices and can lead a more balanced life.

I am fully licensed to work in North Carolina and am also able to practice Telehealth in several other states under the authority of the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT). If you do not reside in North Carolina, please contact me to see if I am able to work with you in a participating state.

Individual Therapy

for Adolescents and Adults

Whether you are looking for short-term support or are seeking answers and insight into long-standing life patterns, individual psychotherapy can be very beneficial.  I will work with you to create goals that focus on areas that that you want to change.

Much of therapeutic change stems from the relationship that you and I establish, so I value our therapist-client alliance.  Our work will largely focus not only on presenting symptoms, but also on the underlying possible causes of these symptoms and as a result, you can expect increased insight and self-understanding.

Children often have difficulty directly addressing their struggles verbally, however, play can provide a common language for processing their emotional turmoil. I utilize both directed and non-directed play therapy techniques to help children express, process, and work through emotional hurdles.  As play is a natural language for young people,  play therapy is often experienced positively by children in treatment.

When the focus of our work is on parenting, my aim is to work within the unique combination of temperament and behaviors of you and your child to find the best way to encourage healthy emotional development. Although there are many cookie-cutter parenting classes and manuals out there, I strongly believe that it often takes a very individualized and family-specific focus in order to adequately make long-term improvements.  Parent guidance is often the work of choice when the focus involves infants and young children.

Using a blend of Gottman influenced techniques, I work with partners who are wanting to prepare and strengthen their relationship, focusing mainly on the transition to marriage and long term commitment, as well as the preparations for parenthood.  I am a certified Gottman Bringing Baby Home educator and greatly enjoy working with expectant partners as they navigate new relationship patterns as they expand their family.

I periodically offer BBH workshops for expectant partners.

The BBH program is a 12-hour research based workshop for expecting partners or those with infants.  It teaches partners how to:

  • Increase friendship in their relationship

  • Deal Effectively with Conflict

  • Involve dads in infant care and caregiving

  • Improve the quality of parent-infant interaction

  • Recognize the psychological and emotional needs of their child

Couples who complete the course have been found to experience:

  • A significantly lower rate of postpartum mood disorders

  • A decrease in relationship hostility

  • A higher level of relationship satisfaction

  • A decreased likelihood of divorce
